Martell is alone among the great cognac houses to distil exclusively clear wines, from which all the lees have been removed. Martell VS Cognac remains one of the most recognised bottles globally, created in the middle of the 19th century. It is blended from Eaux-de-vie, mainly Fins Bois, a cognac region noted for its quick maturation, giving it a fruity charter.

The Martell story started in 1715, when an intelligent businessman, Jean Martell, arrived in Cognac, France. That year, he founded his own Cognac house and married Jeanne Brunet, the daughter of a top Cognac merchant. This innovative move by the New Jersey lad, Martell, established Martell’s cognac house as a household name in France. In 2016, Martell’s cellar and blending secrets were transferred from Benoit Fil, the house’s previous cellar master, to Christophe Valtaud. Valtaud moved from vineyard manager to cellar master and acquired centuries-old secrets, including recipes to iconic blends and the location of “Paradis,” a hidden cellar where the most precious Eaux-de-vie is stored — some of which dates back to 1830.

The clear golden amber cognac presents a caramel, vanilla fudge, green grapes, mocha coffee, black tea leaves, and dark chocolate aroma. The taste is fruity and slightly honey-sweet with gentle spice. Martell VS is best enjoyed in long drinks or a cocktail such as a Peach Old Fashion, robust coffee, etc.
