An Introduction to Campbeltown Whisky
Campbeltown is one of Scotland's five officially recognised whisky regions — and arguably its most storied. Perched on the tip of the Kintyre peninsula in Argyll, this small seaside town once boasted over 30 distilleries, earning it the title "Whisky Capital of the World". Today, only three distilleries remain: Glen Scotia, Glengyle (Kilkerran), and Springbank. But what they lack in number, they more than make up for in character.
What Makes Campbeltown Whisky Unique?
Campbeltown whiskies are renowned for their distinctively complex flavour profile — a combination of briny coastal notes, light peat smoke, dried fruit, vanilla, and a characteristic oiliness that comes from the region's traditional distilling practices. The sea air that sweeps through these distilleries year-round infuses the maturing spirit with a maritime character unlike anything found elsewhere in Scotland.
Glen Scotia: The Heart of Campbeltown
Glen Scotia is one of the last remaining guardians of the Campbeltown tradition. Founded in 1832, the distillery has weathered centuries of boom and bust to produce some of the region's most expressive single malts. Expect waves of salted caramel, green apple, vanilla toffee, and that signature peaty smoke on the finish.
Glen Scotia's range spans from approachable expressions for newcomers to heavily peated and double-cask releases for the experienced collector. It's the perfect entry point into the world of Campbeltown.
How to Enjoy Campbeltown Whisky
Campbeltown malts are wonderfully versatile. Enjoy them neat at room temperature to appreciate their full complexity, or with a small splash of still water to open up the floral and fruit notes. They also make an outstanding base for a peated whisky highball — simply add ice and good quality sparkling water.
