Tequila: Reposado vs Añejo — What's the Difference?
Tequila has never been more exciting. The days of cheap shots and regrettable decisions are behind us — today's tequila landscape is one of the most sophisticated in all of spirits. At the heart of this category is a question every enthusiast eventually asks: what's the difference between Reposado and Añejo?
First, the Basics: How Tequila is Made
All tequila starts with the blue agave plant, grown primarily in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. The piña (heart) of the agave is harvested, cooked, crushed, fermented, and double-distilled. It's what happens next — or doesn't happen — that determines the style.
Blanco (Silver)
Unaged or aged for less than two months, Blanco tequila is the purest expression of the agave plant. Expect bright, herbaceous, citrus-forward flavours with a clean, crisp finish. It's the go-to for margaritas and cocktails where agave character should shine through.
Reposado: The Perfect Middle Ground
"Reposado" means "rested" in Spanish — and that's exactly what it is. Reposado tequila is aged in oak barrels for between two months and one year. This relatively short time in wood softens the raw agave edges and introduces warm notes of vanilla, caramel, toasted oak, and light spice, while still preserving plenty of the agave's natural character.
Reposado is the most versatile expression — complex enough to sip neat, yet structured enough to elevate a cocktail. If you're new to premium tequila, Reposado is the ideal starting point.
Añejo: The Aged Sipper
"Añejo" means "aged" — and these tequilas spend between one and three years maturing in small oak barrels. The extended ageing draws out deep flavours of dried fruit, dark chocolate, butterscotch, and rich wood spice, not unlike a fine whisky or Cognac. The agave character recedes into the background, replaced by a luxurious, slow-sipping experience.
Añejo tequila is best enjoyed neat in a small glass, like a whisky — it's a spirit to savour rather than mix.
Extra Añejo: Beyond the Basics
Aged for more than three years, Extra Añejo is the rarest and most opulent expression of tequila. These are collector's spirits, deeply complex, and typically enjoyed by serious enthusiasts willing to invest in something truly special.
Reposado vs Añejo: Which Should You Choose?
Choose Reposado if you want a tequila that works beautifully in cocktails and can also be sipped straight. Choose Añejo if you're a whisky or Cognac lover looking for a slow-sipping experience with real depth and complexity. Either way, you won't be disappointed.
